Some Volkswagen engines can spring fuel-line leaks, set blazes
Volkswagen is recalling approximately 168,000 of its vehicles due to a possibility that the cars' fuel lines can leak and start a fire. The recall covers the 2009-12 Jetta and Jetta SportWagen, the 2010-12 Golf and the 2010-12 Audi A3, all of which are powered by Volkswagen's Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) engine.
Volkswagen reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that after receiving reports of fuel-line leaks, it began an investigation early last year and found this summer that a fuel injection pulse could "coincide with the natural frequency of the injector line No. 2," to crack the fuel line. The NHTSA launched its own inquiry in August. A Volkswagen spokesperson told The New York Times the automaker was not aware of any fires that had resulted from the problem.
