A 60-year-old woman underwent a total left hip arthroplasty and awoke from surgery paralyzed from the knee down. Studies showed there had been severe damage to the sciatic nerve. She underwent additional surgery which confirmed there was a direct injury to the nerve resulting in her paralysis.
