Are CT Scans Safe?
Experts writing in the New England Journal of Medicine have called for tighter rules for CT scans to improve their safety. CT scans use much more radiation than x-rays, and radiation overdoses can, of course, increase cancer risk.
As is the case with unsafe pharmaceuticals, we cannot count on the FDA to keep us safe. Although the FDA regulates imaging equipment, it does not specify how it is being used. Currently, no federal standards exist for how much radiation may be used, and doses vary widely from facility to facility.
